The four characters of "integration and mastery" run through the learning of ISA IB learners at Guangzhou Foreign Language School.

 

The IBDP is a known as one of, if not the most challenging high school curriculum. In terms of workload, the IB diploma requires students to study six major subject groups from a balance range of courses to provide breadth and depth and three core courses that develop skills throughout all subjects, focusing on developing students that are ready for the academic rigour of highly selective colleges and universities.

 

Unlike other high school programme, the IB provides guidance on how the course should be delivered though their approaches to teaching (ATTs) and approaches to learning (ATLs) so both teachers and students are guided with clear expectations of what is required to be successful. The three core courses focus on developing those ATL skills with Theory of Knowledge developing Thinking and Communication skills, Extended Essay developing Research and self-management skills, while CAS develops Collaboration and self-reflection through activities taken beyond the classroom. These all promote a more harmonious and open minded community which is of benefit to Guangzhou and China with future leaders who can bridge the gap and provide opportunities for economic growth.

在这样的教学培养模式下,IB学子在数学、物理、化学、经济、商业、学术领袖等各大国际竞赛中屡获殊荣,多次夺得全球金奖、全球银奖等名次,人均获奖1.4次,优异的竞赛成绩将为学生获得国际顶尖名校的青睐增分加彩。

In IB teaching, teachers will also actively try to teach in different ways to how your child has learned previously and give students the opportunity to create conceptual understanding i.e. they understand the key ideas and can apply them to new situations.

For example, you will see the teachers in Biology teach cell structure using coloured clay art, so that students grasp the relative sizes and positions of organelles (small parts of the cell) in 3 Dimensions which brings more clarity to their functions.  Where possible, curriculum content is linked, so literature work can be represented in Art to express an issue in a different medium which promotes discussion and academic thinking. Science subjects work together in a Group 4 project to show how sciences can overlap and how the traditionally taught disciplines are less clear when you arrive in the workplace. In this way, students can understand the connection between disciplines and learn how to think about practical problems from different lens, combining and selecting the best methods to solve the problem at hand.

With this teaching methodology, it means our students think differently to their peers and when tested against them, our IB students have won many awards in major international competitions such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics, business, and educational leadership. Outstanding competition results will support students’ college or university applications as it allows them to distinguish themselves nationally and/or internationally.

· In the 2022 UK Advanced Mathematics Test UKMT-SMC, 20 IB students from our school won 13 global gold awards, 4 global silver awards, and 3 global bronze awards.

· In the 2022 British Intermediate Mathematical Thinking Challenge, our school's IB students won 5 global gold awards and 2 global silver awards.

· In the 2022 British Physics Olympiad (BPhO), IB students of our school won 2 global gold medals and 1 global silver medal

· In the 2022 International Economics Olympiad, two IB students from our school won the silver medal of the national individual total score

· In the 2022 NEC National Economics Challenge, our school’s IB students won 9 golds, 3 silvers and 6 bronzes, and a total of 4 students were included in the National Full Score Hall of Fame

· In the 2022 BPA Business All-round Challenge, 12 IB students from our school won national awards. The winning rate is 75%, of which national awards account for 62.5%

· In the 2021 "Physics Bowl" American High School Physics Challenge, our school's IB students won the National Silver Award

· In 2021, the IB students of our school won the National Gold Award and the Global Bronze Award in the Canadian Junior Chemistry Olympiad (JCCO); in the 2021 Canadian Chemistry Competition (CCC), the IB students of our school won the National Silver Award and the Regional Excellence Award

· In the 2021 Harvard China-US Academic Leaders Summit, IB students of our school won the title of "Highest Honor Student"

· In the "World Scholars Cup" in 2021, our school won two golds and seven silvers in the IB National Competition, ranked fifth in the South China Division, and advanced to the Yale Championship

· In 2021, 11 IB students from our school won the AMC Australian Mathematics Competition Award, among which Zhai won the National Excellence Award

· In the 2021 BPA Business All-around Challenge, our school’s IB students won the third place in the world, and they are the only Chinese team in this research group.

· In the 2021 Cayley Contest 10, a series of mathematics competitions held by the University of Waterloo in Canada, a total of 11 IB students from our school won the top 25% certificates in the world.

· Finally and most recently, our G10 HOSA Biology candidates have been selected to represent China in the international event in Dallas, Texas in June 2023.

Home School Communication – rowing in the same direction for your child’s success

     

For the IB learner community, smooth communication and building a high level of trust is important as we are asking students and parents to do things differently from what they have seen before. To help parents understand the programme, the school has built a variety of opportunities for home-school communication. We use various methods such as principal salons, parent-student-teacher conferences, one-on-one professional admission guidance interviews, and personalized parent meetings, so everyone is on the same page and pushing in the same direction. Only together, can you child reach their full academic potential.

Becoming internationally minded – an IB tenet

 

Our IB programme wants to develop students who will contribute in some small manner of making the world a better place. This cannot be done alone, and learning to collaborate and the social skills requied are vital for the future. We pay careful attention to the development of students' interpersonal and communication skills. Compared to other high school courses, our students often have assignments that need to be completed in groups to practice collaboration, leadership and communication.

 

 

国际文凭组织(IBO)希望培养勤学好问、知识渊博、富有爱心的年轻人,他们可以通过对多元文化的理解和尊重,为开创更美好、更和平的世界贡献力量。服务社区是IBer职责,在这里,同学们努力践行IB的使命宣言,学会了主动有意识地关心社区,通过行动来改善共同的环境,为社区服务

 

就像在刚刚过去的IB家长会中,近二十位同学自告奋勇,成为本次家长会的志愿者,协助家长会顺利进行;又例如在上一学年的跨学科活动中,同学们探讨的主题是“可持续发展”,他们希望运用批判性思维和培养解决问题的技能,把从课本学到的理论知识联系到社会实际,关注社会问题,为社会和公众服务。

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) aspires to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who, through understanding and respect for diverse cultures, can contribute to a better and more peaceful world. Serving the community is the responsibility of “IBer”. Here, students strive to fulfil the mission statement of IB, learn to care about the community, improve the common environment through actions, and serve the community actively and consciously.

 

This can be simple tasks, so for our last IB parent meeting, nearly 20 students volunteered to support. They help guide, explain concepts of interdisciplinary learning and discuss how they can better serve the community. These students all presented on sustainable development showcasing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, connect theoretical knowledge learned in class to a problem that is present in the local community

IB students also spontaneously established a service group where they could volunteer for outside projects providing care, support and tenacity to various projects in primary schools, charities and environmental concerns. They hope that these small tokens of warmth, help the lives of people other than themselves, reducing in a small way the  hardships and difficulties that they face. We hope that these people “pay it forward” which benefits an even greater range of people in our community.
