Introduction to Guangzhou Foreign Language School



        Guangzhou Foreign Language School (GZFLS for short) is one of the first seven foreign language schools approved by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China in 1962. It was founded in Shaheding, Guangzhou in 1963 and suspended in 1966, whose staff were absorbed into Guangzhou College of Foreign Language (Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies currently). It was resumed in Pei Ying Secondary School in 1972, and moved to the site of No.22 Middle School (True Light High Schoolnow) in Guangzhou in 1977, and its staff were absorbed into Guangzhou Normal School.



        In July 2007, the Guangzhou Municipal Government decided to build a new school for resuming Guangzhou Foreign Language School in Nansha District. The school started to be constructed in May 2009 and opened in January 2010. According to the modern education deployment of Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Education as “forefront of the world, first-class in China, with Guangzhou characteristics and demonstration leading”, the school-running orientation clearly stipulated in SJH (2016)No.1646 is “to become a model window school to cultivate innovative and top-notch talents, actively explore the diversified development of ordinary high schools, promote the international exchange and cooperation of basic education in Guangzhou, and introduce high end talents for Guangzhou.”



        GZFLS is located at No. 102, Fenghuang Avenue, Nansha District, Guangzhou, covering an area of 269 mu. It is now a public, full-time and boarding secondary school directly under the Municipal Bureau of Education, mainly undertaking the education of general junior and senior degree courses. The offices, general affairs office, educational affairs office, moral education office and international department are set up with the approval of the Municipal Office, and 219 (34 newly increased) teaching and administrative staff are approved. Among them, there is one principal, one secretary, two vice presidents (one is still vacant), and the cadre team is loyal, pure and responsible. 



        GZFLS was officially resumed for enrolling students in spring 2010. There are 6 grades for junior and senior high school with 48 classes and 1792 students (planned to recruit 1800 students), of which 1049 are junior high school students and 743 are senior high school students.The team of teachers is young, lively and capable. There are 209 of teaching and administrative staff (including temporary staff of 43). The average age of authorized staff is 38.3 years old, 12 full-time foreign teachers (including foreign teachers hired by international curriculum partners) are hired all the year round. Among them, there are 76 CPC members and 7 members of democratic parties;There are 66 male teachers and 96 female teachers; 116 have bachelor's degree and 44 have master's degree; There are 3 special-grade teachers, 3 principal senior teachers, 49 deputy senior teachers, 67 intermediate teachers, 36 junior teachers (including 3 teaching assistants), and 9 teachers without evaluated professional titles (including 2 trainees and 7 staff on management positions).



        The campus covers an area of 269 Mu and is constructed in two phases. With a construction area of 48,450 square meters, the first phase of the projectwas built by Nansha District Government in 2009 and completed in the same year.The second phase of the project has a total land area of 179,332 square meters, a planned building area of 70,124 square meters, and a total investment of 340 million yuan.The planning, design and bidding have been completed, and construction will be started within this year. After the completion of the second phase of the project, the total construction area of the school will reach 124,599 square meters (including 48,450 square meters of the first phase and 6,205 square meters of independent construction).At the same time, the scale of junior high school and senior high school will be doubled on the basis of the scale of the first phase, reaching 108 classes of junior high school and senior high school with a total of 3600 students of Chinese nationality (1800 in junior high school and 1800 in senior high school), the scale of 4800 students in total is achieved, and the scale of teachers will be further expanded.The school strives to build a diversified and open international school-running pattern to lay a foundation for the cultivation of compound and international talents.The school offers three mainstream international courses as A-level, AP and IB, "5 + 1 + 3" curriculum model for foreign language teaching, the small classes, AB class hierarchical teaching.In recent years, international sister schools has been established with well-known middle schools in many countries, andthe school has negotiated and signed international education cooperation projects with world-class universities, and made efforts to build a green channel for students to go directly to world-class universities.
